I am working on a 1550 diesel and am needing some help. I bought a motor that was in pieces and I am now ready to install the pump and drive gear. What is the right timming procedure for the pump drive gear and pump to shaft timming. Role engine over to 1 on comp stroke and the install shaft and gear. Then line up the dots and install pump? The pump was off and the gear had been removed. I had the pump reworked at the pump shop and it should be ready for install. Thanks

You said: Role engine over to 1 on comp stroke and the install shaft and gear. Then line up the dots and install pump? What dots? I don't remember any dots on the gear. Get it lined up on #1 compression stoke at the proper pump timing mark. Line up the timing marks in the pump window. Have the pump drive shaft installed before installing the pump, install the pump drive shaft hub, torque the hub properly and install the gear. Roll it backwards about 1/4 turn and roll it forward and double check your timing.

J I was wondering about the dot on the end of the pump drive shaft and the one on the inside of the pump where the shaft fits into. I thought those had to be lined up before the pump went on and also the line in the window of the pump. Thanks

That would be good practive to do. The 2 dots are so if you remove the pump without removing the drive shaft you don't get it 180 out of time. Yes you need to align the line in the window and then have the engine on the correct mark on the flywheel compression stroke for #1.
