Having trouble getting my 1650 gas started. It did need a new battery but still no go. If i jump across on the solenoid from the post closest to the motor to the battery cable hook up ,it will start. what is the center post on solonoid for? do i need a new solonoid. TIA.

Sounds like either a bad key switch or a break in the wiring between the switch and solenoid.

The extra solenoid terminal is to bypass the coil ballast resistor (if used...) when the starter is engaged to give a hotter spark while cranking.

A few years ago i had a 1650 gas that needed a solenoid. Had lots of trouble with finding one that would hold up. Last about a crank or two and kept blowing. I was buying them at NAPA and whatever they crossed to didn't work. I changed it to just a heavy duty truck solenoid and it started like a top.

I think it's your neutral switch. There are two wires that come down from under the dash on the right hand side,go under the cast cowl and in to the top of the transmission. They have spade type connectors on them. Try sliding those connectors out and back in.
I don't know what I did to my 1550 when I had it apart last summer to rebuild the 3pt cylinder, but I ended up making a jumper wire to hook the two together that came down from the dash,to complete the curcuit.
Before you go that far, just slap the heck out of the shift.
