1550 Transmission question

I was driving my 1550 over to a friends house to pick up a 3 point implement when all of a sudden the tractor started slowing down and pulling hard. A squalling noise was coming from the transmission like it was locking up and then all of a sudden it let go and worked/ran fine. When I got home I pulled the plug off of the transmission and some water came out before the oil, after it drained there was a spacer (washer)broken in 3 pieces in the bottom of the transmission. I looked at my parts book and it appears to be washer part #K-641, 52 in part book under transmission. Has anyone ever had this happen or noticed this washer broke and laying in the bottom of the case? I dont really pull this tractor very hard and wonder if it is a super critical washer? by looking at the diagram I am gueeing that I could maybe get away without it. It is on the bottom shaft right behind the engine, inside the transmission case.
