Dual speed PTO in a 2-155

Anyone ever put a dual speed pto from a 2-135 in a 2-155? Been looking at the manuals and can't tell if it's as easy as unbolting the single speed unit out of the 155 and bolting the dual speed unit back in its place, or if there is more to it. Don't need the 155 in the field anymore, but it's useless as a hay/ chore tractor without a 540 pto.

Hello, Mitch!
Here's what I know about installing a dual-speed PTO into a 2-155. In the early year models, yes, it is a simple bolt-in swap. The ASAE or OSHA set a horsepower limit of 140 PTO hp for a 540 RPM PTO, so at some serial number point (sorry, I do not know the serial number break), the dual-speed PTO for the 2-155 was discontinued. (This is why Deere sold more 4440's than 4640's, and IHC sold more 1486's than 1586's). Folks like you simply needed the dual-speed option. What I have seen done (and I am NOT recommending this, just saying I have seen it) is to remove some of the lower cast flange in the rear-interior of the final drive housing. White cast a taller flange (i.e. a smaller opening) in the 2-155 and 2-180 and later 140+ Hp tractors to prevent owners/dealers from installing the dual-speed PTO. The ones I have seen were done by drilling a series of small holes along the flange, and then sawing-off the excess material. Upon doing this, the owner takes full responsibility for any equipment damage or personal injury that may result from overpowering a 540 RPM implement. There is not a "torque limiter" on the earlier 540 PTO's, as is now offered by some manufacturers. I am sure that other older Oliver/White mechanics have seen this done, too. You may be lucky and have an early serial number tractor where it is a simple swap. Enjoy a safe weekend!
