easiest way is count the ports, a 310 will have 12 port vs the 265 will only have 9....BUT there was also a 283ci which is a 12 port head and has same stroke as 265 which is 4.00". I do not know how to tell between 283 and 310, hopefully someone else chimes in

310 is 3.875x4.375 stroke
283 is 3.875x4.00 stroke
265 is 3.75x 4.00 stroke

Hope this helps a little

The 265 will also have the old style Lanova head with the bigger bodied injectors and the energy cells on the intake side of the head. Those intakes had "Oliver Diesel" written on the side.

There is no way to tell a 283 from a 310 without tearing it apart. My guess would be look at the water pump, where the fan bolts on. The 310s had a longer shaft so the fan would be up into the shroud, but a water pump from a 283 would bolt on as well and would probably need to be if it's in an 88.

Some differences between the 310 and 283 are that the 283 has 9/16" head bolts and the 310 has 5/8". The valves on the 310 head are also bigger, in addition to the extra 3/8" of stroke on the crank. But like I said, you can't tell those differences without doing some wrenching.

You can also have 283 & 310 engines that have the Lanova heads. You can also have 310 engines with 9/16 inch head bolts. Get the model and serial number off of the injection pump while you are looking. Casting numbers on the block MAY help as well.

I forgot about those engines, I've only been around the 55 series and the Fleetline/Super series for the most part. Those early 283/310 engines slipped my mind. If my memory serves me right, the Lanova 310 had a bigger intake manifold, noticeably bigger than the one found on an 88 or 1600.
