1650 diesel need either to start

have a late 1650 diesel (indirect injection) needs either to start the first time every day but once its started for the day will start fine all day, is this a worn out engine, injector problem or what? im sure someone out there has had this same problem , any ideas would be a great help befor i overhaul a tractor that may not need it , thanks to all

I worked on my Dads ford 8000 that had this problem and we put new injectors in it. It helped a lot but to cure the problem totally I would suggest a rebuild.

Does it put out a lot of white smoke? Does it use oil or lose water? One of mine was putting out a lot of white smoke on start up or if it ran with a light steady load. Compression was way low. It had a turbo and once it got under a load and boost came up, it came alive and ran strong. Rebuild and make sure valve protrusion is correct might be needed.

whe cranking it dont throw white smoke which seems stange to me it should, but dont seem to lose fuel prime it has the knock like it wants to fire just wont, but dont know if glow plugs are heating up shouldnt matter when its 80 deg. out side, could it be injector problem , worn out nossels not spraying just fludding in fuel? just some ideas

worn injectors can make a big diff. but i wonder if your timing is correct.

does it have abnormal blowby? probably need to check tips very important on those old pre cup engines for cold start. also may be developing injector pump head problems if so will only get worse.Also might check timing.

What have you checked on it up to this point? How much smoke do you have when it tries to start? Have you taken the exhaust manifold off to see if some cylinders smoke more or less than other ones?

There is only one 'glow plug'; it is located on the intake manifold. Easy to check. Push the switch for thirty seconds or so, then feel the center of the manifold to see if it is warm.
It is not so uncommon for IDI engines to need warm air for cold starting.
Do not use both ether and preheated, by the way!

Sounds like worn delivery valve in the pump. That valve moves for each firing event. If it"s worn, it takes some cranking to get pressure to inject.

there is probably nothing wrong with it unless big glow plug is burnt out . i have asuper 88 i have to use either on for 20 years just use a little bit dont even use glow plug with either
