Did the D21 have the same Jumping Out Of Gear problems that the earlier D-Series and 100 series did? Paul
 
From what I have heard yes they had the same problems that many did due to up grades in engine but not transmission
 
Ours was a series II with the turbo; gobs of power. The transmission never gave any trouble but the finals were about like the XT-190, and the 21 could tear them up without even taking a deep breath. The 220 was about 4 inches longer and 1500 pounds heavier; all in the finals. The 210 was just a 220 with the pump squeezed back about ten or fifteen horses. In my world they were awesome horses. Also of interest; I have a late model D-21 ser II that has the 220 rear end. This was a factory exchange available in the early 70"s for a nominal fee to the customer who had problems. Makes an awesome tractor.
 
Oh yes D21,s jumped out of gear bad,, AC shouldve fired every engineer on that project,, D21 never got a 220 rear end at factory expense,, some shade tree mechanic done that Allis never done it by the time the 220,s came along D21,s were all history- just like any AC tractor if they were used for what they were intended for they were awesome, too many ignorant owners turned them up weighted them down and pulled the guts out of them leaving the machines in pieces then bad mouthing AC when they should've been thinking a lil
 
I have owned the 160, 180, 185, 190xt, 3 D21's, and a 210. Would have to rebuild the D21 about every other year but would put about 4 to 5000 hours on them. The rod and main bearings were the real problem. I never had any transmission problems. The 210 had lots of steering issues only.
