AC 6080 hard starting

I have a 6080 Allis that is very hard to start first thing in the mornging, at any temperature it will spin + smoke and evenyually start- but if you plug it in ( freese plug) heat for an hour it will start on the first round--- WHY????????

When they were new, the earlier 6060's & 6080's were hard starting. On anything but a hot day, a little whiff of ether was necessary unless you wanted to crank a long time. As long as the ether injector was used sparingly it was fine.
We were told they (AC) resisted changing anything because the engine was so efficient and powerful. They did later up the compression I believe. As the later ones started much better.
Now? This is 30 years later. Could be lots of things.

Its has a new starter, new batteries and injectors + pump rebuilt last year - its always been bad but getting worse , maybe rebuild time?

I just dont understand what the plugging in heat does to get it to start on the first turn over when the waters warm

A warm engine starts easier than a cold engine.....think winter vs summer. Just varying degrees. They turn over faster and are more prone to start.

Yes thats true, but it doesnt start at 80° , plugging in heats it more i kno but why wont it start at 80 ,the engine turns over fast etc: then u plug it in and it fires right off,, what does the extra heat change?

Early model 6080 had a 14.1 compression ratio while the later models starting at engine serial number 20833, were 15.1 to improve cold starting. Late 1983 models had a manifold air heater, as an improvement, as well. As heat causes diesel fuel to combust any additional warming (caused by increased compression) is beneficial. I would suggest you may have other problems, as I own a 1981 model year 6080 with an original 3745 hours on it. While mine retains its cold blooded reputation, nevertheless on summer mornings it fires up without the ether starting aid. Any temperature below 45 degrees... she needs a little assist from the ether button on the dash. Normally she will fire and I just hit the ether button to keep her going. Other than low hours and presumably good injectors, I rebuilt the injector pump a few years back for a "governor" problem and turned the pump to the low side. Believe it or not she starts easier and doesn't smoke nearly as much when cold. You just might have a tried engine, experiencing compression loss.

I have a 6060 with the low compression pistons. I was offered the higher compression pistons free, right after I bought it new. I didn't take then up on their offer. I didn't want my new tractor taken apart. And it hasn't needed anything but the valves adjusted, a water pump,diesel pump, and a clutch, in 30 yrs. It doesn't start very good either. Will start better if throttle is at dead idle. I keep a full can of either in the injector and another one in the tool box. My 6060 had a intercooler installed before they delivered it and the pump was turned up to 100 hp. It has wore the drawbar out pulling a no-till drill in high second. Vic

I worked for a guy for a few years that had a '83 6080 and it started good unless it was real cold out.

Now my dad's '81 6060 is a hard starter no matter what the temp is. Always has been since new.
