D-17 Questions

Hello Chalmers people; I spend a bunch of time on the JD board but had a job come my way; D-17 gas,engine oil has coolant in it,coolant did not freeze. First guess would say head gasket but I am not sure if these tractors had any traits of their own. Tractor belongs to my BIL,it is semi retired now but still useful. I worked for him back in the '70s and "the 17" was the tractor on the blower at the silo (75') She never said No, just laid her ears back like a mule and kept at the job. It deserves to stay in the workforce longer. Thanks in advance for any input, Bob

Remove the tappets cover and look at the freeze plugs, often times they will get tiny rust holes in them and let coolant out and mix with the oil under the cover.

D17 engine has wet sleeves. Prone to leak at the seals. Drop pan and look up under cylinders to see if any coolant is leaking out there. Helps if coolant is colored some other color than oil. Like green.

Bob, Remove the valve cover and check the bore plug in the top of the head. They have a tendency to get soft and leak coolant into the engine.
Poke them with a screwdriver. next choice would be the o ring on the bottom of the sleeves. Drop the pan and check for seepage there. LOL Bob
