AC B Stub axle replacement

I need to replace the rear stub axle on a AC B. I know that there is a big nut on the inside of the final drive that must be loosened. The last time I did this, many years ago, I used a monkey wrench and a hammer. Anyone got any better ideas?

Go to NAPA and get a big socket to fit it.

About exactly what I do. The difference in how I do it is with the press I do not have to beat on the axle. You do have to move the axle a little as you loosen the nut. On the press as soon as the nut clears the threads the axle drops out with very little pressing.

For stuff like that I use a 3/4 drive socket set I have and a long cheater bar or my impact gun. I have sockets all the way up to 3 inches and wrenches up to 2-1/2 inch

Can't use a socket as this nut has only two flats and is in the middle of the axle in a very tight space inside the bull gear housing.

i cut out a big wrench out of 3/8 steel plate. Has to be thin to get between the case and gear. Pipe wrench might be a little wide.

I cut myself a wrench. That is the same nut as the one on the outside, so I used that as a template. Used a piece 1/4" thick stock, 5' long, then cut half the nut pattern into the end, welded another section with the other half of the cut out to it. Now I have a long handled wrench to tighten the outside nut too. IIRC I jammed my pry into the bull gear and the nut was not too bad to loosen. Dick L has it right, loosen the nut, tap or pess the shaft until you run out of play, then repeat.
