So, tell me about the 65 gas power steering pumps

Friend and I both have GAS 65's with bad power steering. I haven't looked at his, but he says it's a Barnes pump. I forget what mine is at the moment. He's been told his can't be rebuilt. What's the scoop on these pumps? IIRC his looked like mine but I can't find much info anywhere so far. We'd both like to fix them, where do we start looking?

Are the pumps really bad? The contol valve pins and link ends when worn will not move the spool valve for power assist as it should. Have seen the pump drive gear key shear though before too.

On mine you put oil in and it's in the oil pan in a few minutes. I'm assuming the seals are gone in mine, His I don't know about yet. I'm wondering about makes and models and rebuilding them.

I had an early 65 years ago with a bad Barnes power steering pump. A friend with connections to a fork lift business found a similar pump from a fork lift and made one good pump out of 2.

65 gas before SN692981 used a Barnes pump, shaft seal 1751651M1. Later models used a Cessna pump, shaft seal 1021972M1. Maybe the seal you need can be crossed to another supplier # if the pump works OK when the oil is still in it.
