Another Newbie has some questions on a Witte

I found a witte motor model B that I was crazy enough to try and rebuild (even though I know nothing about these little motors). It was in pretty sad shape when I got it. Everything was locked up tight (and some still is). I have a few questions that I hope somebody can answer.

1. How in the world do you get the governor gear off? (see pic 1)
2. How bad do you think the piston is? (pic 2) What is the best way to get it out? It is sticking out the back about 1/2". (pic 3)
3. The retard/advance lever took it tough. Is it something that somebody reproduces or has parts of or should I braze it up? (pic 4) Secondly, from the hole where the pin goes there is a small hairline fracture going about 3/4" down the pin (towards the handle). Is that something I need to fix/replace or is a hairline fracture ok?

Thanks for any help. I jumped into an ugly one, the price seemed ok at first, now I am not so sure.

Pat,

If you want to repair the handle so that

it really does not show the repair , do it

with oxy/acet and cast iron . Questions ,send

me an email.

Ok, so after a little cursing, heat and 8 ton jack, I got the piston out. However, before I could do that I had to get the governor out. So I heated it and with some careful tapping I was able to unscrew (like a normal bolt) the governor gear. A little heat on the housing and a little pounding and I was able to drive the governor gear out, however that was after I broke the rod off from inside the piston (DOPE!!). Anyway the piston is out, looks to be in good condition. Now to get the wrist pin out. Any tricks? Or should I just drill it out. What holds it in the piston? Anybody know of an extra rod sitting around they are interested in selling?

The gov gear is threaded on. Normal direction of the gear tightens it; which I think is clockwise, so turn it counterclockwise.

What is the best way to get it out? It is sticking out the back about 1/2". (pic 3)

Cut a block of wood to fit into the cylinder as close to the sides as possible; Flush out as much of the rust you can. You can set the engine block upright and pour brake fluid or PB blaster into the cylinder. The when ready, put in the block, use a BIG hammer and tap it out.

No problem; it'll work
