Wisconsin VF4D VH4D parts ??

I have a locked down parts engine Wisconsin VH4D with electric start and flywheel stator alternator. Will the VH4D flywheel work okay on the VF4D hand crank engine and will other parts interchange? Want to put electric start on the VF4D engine on a Lincoln welder. They look close to the same. Also have another parts engine V461D if anyone needs it for parts. Thanks.

Many parts on VF4D and VH4D are interchangeable. The parts not interchangeable are crankshaft, camshaft, distributor or magneto. This is due to the different firing angles. The VH4D is and evenly spaced 180 deg between firing the VF4d is uneven with one spacing being only 90 deg and another being 120 deg. I think the big end bearings are different sizes as well so con rods would not be interchangeable. As to the flywheel I have no experience of the stator alternators on these engines.

Good luck

Ok, Thanks. I knew there were odd and even fire ones but wasn't sure which ones anymore. Anyone know how hard to get flywheels off or trick for that too? Got the snake oil soaking on them and hoping they come off soon. Thanks.

To remove Wisconsin flywheel:-

1 – loosen flywheel retaining nut several turns– do not use flywheel fins to prevent flywheel from turning during this operation.

2 – hold top of flywheel (fingers round fins) with one hand and lightly pull away from crankshaft (heel of hand on shroud) while striking the end of the crankshaft hard with a heavy deadblow hammer (official way), or as I used to do with a heavy steel hammer. Do this with feeling and confidence. Struck hard few flywheels need more than one good, heavy blow.

When replacing flywheel do not use oil on taper as this may lead to flywheel chatter and expensive damage.

Good luck

Has anyone out there actually removed a flywheel that way? I know that is what it says in the manual, but I have removed at least 5 of them and I have always had to tap holes in the flywheel and use a puller. I broke two pullers and had to use some heat on one of them.

I used to work for Wisconsin dealer and have removed hundreds of flywheele this way - the only exception is the V461D and V465D they already have bolt holes for a puller plate in the flywheel boss.

As my service manger said "hit it like you mean to kill it" - a 4 lb hammer was all I used. Still have the hammer.

Yes it works

Curt, Had to remove both of them and both were stuck hard and had to soak with Kroil and turn a brass bump cap for the crank and use the BFH (big sledge) more than a few hard bumps and flywheels finally came off. Was able to get behind the one prying some to help. I also tapped around on them with my air hammer using brass bump cap to help loosen them up. Still not easy thouugh. Thought I was going to have to drill and tap to pull them too. Took over a week soaking to get them off. Then had to degrease everything for assembly. They made bump caps like that for the cranks on B&S and it always helped bumping hard while prying to get flywheels off.
