simple wiring for a diesel 85 or 90

I am trying to wire up my tractor. It has a alternator with a built in regulator on it. The guy I got it from had the "hot" wire from the alternator going to one side of the amp hand and then the other side of amp hand went to battery.......I know that is not right. I just need to know where to take the hot wire (switch??) or where. I can do the lights from the switch.......no idea what I need to do to keep this safe.

I think mine has the exact same setup and the gauge doesn"t work. I"m replacing the ammeter with a volt gauge to simplify things. I also have a modern alternator on mine. Most of my wiring was redone poorly at some point so I"m going to completely re wire the tractor and add a few modern switches for the fuel pump, lights, and engine pre-heat solenoid.

Cheers,

Matt
