MF 175 Power Steering Pump Removal

The power steering pump on our early model 175 has developed a leak. A crack has appeared in the "rear cover", the piece that the reservoir bolts to.

I removed three screws that go through the timing gear cover into the front of the pump. The pump still seems to be solidly attached to the engine.

I have a bad feeling about this question, but anyway, are there screws behind the timing cover that must be removed to get the pump off?

Thanks,
JP.

Is this a gas engine? Just to be clear you took out the three bolts that go through the timing cover to the power steering pump! Then the pump should come off. It could be stuck on with the paper gasket sometimes hard to remove, there is"nt any more bolts on it, make sure that you removed all three bolts. Also someone may have used silicon to put it it on with.

Oops, 236 diesel.

There were two screws, 3/8 x 2 course threads, that could be accessed from the front of the engine with the timing gear cover still on. They definitely were holding the pump, I could see the threaded ends turning out on the pump side.

The third screw was short, 3/8 x 1 1/4 fine threads, I'm not entirely sure what it was for.

She seems to be on real solid, I tapped, firmly but gently and nothing moved or opened at all.

I looked at the "agco parts book" I think there is only the three bolts holding it on .I would check to see that the bolts are removed from the pump housing . Wiggle pump with your hands up and down side to side see if will start to move, I would not try to pry pump off

From your description, I believe you have removed the three retaining bolts to remove the pump. But take a second look before you "get serious" about removing it. The lower of the mounting bolts is the tricky one. You may have inadvertently removed one of the timing cover retaining bolts by mistake.
Later aftermarket replacement pumps only utilise two bolts to retain it.
If the rear housing has cracked, and leaking oil, it may possibly be that the relief valve has jammed, and over-pressurised the pump at some stage. The relief valve is located on the rear section.
I'm only familiar with the English versions of the 175's, and these were solely "power assisted" steering, not full hydro-static systems. The U.S. versions may be either.Replacement pumps for either come with the valve factory set, so source a replacement pump and away you go. Cost effectively, it won't be an option to rebuild your old pump.

I found the third screw and was able to get the pump off.

It turns out that what I thought was a crack in the casting is just a mark from the mold. The pump was leaking because the seals and orings have deteriorated badly.

Anybody know where I can get a seal kit? Online parts does not list a kit, although judging by the lettered footnotes there probably used to be one available.

Thanks,
JP.

P.S.

After a little searching around I guess I need a 836466m91 seal kit. Know of any on line sources for these?
