OT pressure switch

Had a pipe freez in my shop sink. Replaced the copper, turned the pump back on and heard water running, Looked in the crawl space and there was water gushing out of the pressure tank. The pressure guage had corroded and broke, and the reliefe valve was dumping water. Replaced both of them (parts were very inexpensive) Fired it back up and the new reliefe valve was still dumping water. Took it back off, took it apart and cleaned some debris out of the seat area, put it back on the tank and no leak, but the guage shot up over 100 PSI and stayed there. Never saw the switch cut on or off. Typical plumbing project.
Question? is there a way to test the pressure switch? New one is less than $30 and I"m tempted to just replace it that way everything will be new. I would prefer to not have to crawl back under there any time soon. Any ideas? Could the switch being stuck damage the other two?

Did you maybe get a pressure switch made for air instead of water. I know the local stores that have them in may area have to 2 sitting side by side and it would be easy to get the wrong one or have some one looking at them set them in the wrong place. I just got one not long ago but since the old one is still working fine with the rigging I did I figured might as well get all the life out of it that I can. My new one is a 30 on 50 off
 
No Old, I haven't replaced the switch yet but probably will tomorrow. I am aware it needs to be one for water. This is a 30/50 as well
 
Thanks DH That is a good idea, I will check the nipple first thing. We have had some unprecedented low temps here.
 
Ok so your still on the old pressure switch so could be bad gauge or the contacts maybe welded up which I have seen more then once on pressure switch and when that happens pipe break and other fun/odd thing go wrong
 
thanks guys, it was a bad switch. The nipple was also almost blocked with crud. Hate to throw parts at a problem but on this one all three were bad. The pipe freezing was actually a good thing. It made me look at these other issues.
