my massey 245 diesel has been clicking when i try to start it for a while it would click once then when you turn the key again it would start. it finally stranded me and i crossed the solenoid out with a screwdriver it started. but now my amp gauge fuel and temp gauge doesnt work thanks to any that can help. mike in ky.

sounds like you could be losing power to all the dash components (lights, ign switch, gauges etc). I think these get all the main power from the solenoid on a wire that goes up to the Amp/volt meter and gets spread out from there.

i tried a new solenoid still nothing. decided to check the ignition switch when i unpluged it one of the prongs broke off. it was kind of corroded. would the switch not working have anything to do with the gauges not working?

Gearhead hit it, there is a wire from the big terminal on the solenoid that carries power to the instument cluster. Trace that wire end to end and insure that is making good contact. Also, while not directly tied to your problem, check the two fuses on the dash. BTW, when it started after you shorted the solenoid out that was an indication that your solenoid was OK. Replace the ignition switch and clean the connections, double check the battery connections at BOTH ends and you "should" be good. Otherwise you'll need a wiring diagram and start chasing wires. Good Luck!

When mine started doing that (not a M245), it turned out to be a bad main wire between my battery and the starter motor. It was broken. I finally found it by wiggling the wire while turning the key...

I just had a similar problem on a 245. It would do nothing with the key but I could jump the solenoid with a screwdriver to start it. Turned out to be the neutral safety switch.
