Massey w/ Perkins 1004.40T vibration?

I have a Massey with a Perkins 1004.40T that has a strange engine noise/vibration. This tractor is new to me, so perhaps the sound is normal. It sounds like a low frequency "whomp whomp whomp" in time with the engine speed, even when stopped with both main and pto clutches disengaged. The tractor only has 1600 hours, and I just adjusted the valves and did a complete service. I plan to loosen the belts and run without the accessories.

Sounds like an out of balance noise to me, a bit like what sometimes happens when you drive a car down the freeway with the window open juuuust right.

The tractor runs and pulls fine, never heats up and is great otherwise, but this noise is really annoying, now that my attention has been drawn to it.

The engine looks so new, with only 1600 hours. When I had the valve cover off everything looked great. The engine doesn"t smoke out the exhaust or breather, so I wouldn"t suspect engine wear like worn timing gears. Is this a particular problem on that model Perkins?

I work on these engines fitted to MANITOU telescopic handlers. Had amachine il last month with bad vibrations and the timing gears were worn out, the teeth on the gears were at a sharp point. Also the idler gear bush was worn badley. MJ

On my engine, the oil filler cap is just above the timing gear for the injection pump. The teeth of that gear look fine. Did you find that all gears were worn on the engine you looked at?
