wireing starter 165 massey

Boy do I feel stupid on this one. I had a starter go out on a 165 massey three cyl diesel.
When I unbolted this thing I droped it and it had a black wire hooked to the solinoid short wire with the loop on one end and a metal plug on the other. I took it to a shop and he tore the starter apart and lost the wire as it was left on the starter.

Looking at whats left. I have the loop end for the battery to the starter, a small red wire which I am sure goes to the solenoid. A black wire with large loop that looks like it goes on with the battery line to the hot on starter. At first I thought it was a ground wire but the loop is big. I dont see a ground anywhere. Wondering if this thing grounds to the frame.

Also the black wire that was lost I AM SURE WENT TO THE solenoid also as I remember it. But can you believe it I cant find anywhere that it might plug into if I replace it.

I followed the harness back thinking there might be a plug and only the red and black wire inside the wire caseing.

Anybody have any ideas before I burn this thing up?

165 Massey three cyl diesel? That can"t be right. The MF 165 had a 4 cylinder engine. The 135 and 148 had the 3 pot.

No, the starter frame is grounded to the tractor block. What you said above is correct, battery cable PLUS black wire on the HOT, red wire to the small solenoid connection. This works on most US MF diesels whether 3, 4, or even 8 cylinders. The color of the wire is variable.

Ha Ha well shows what I know I always thought it was a 3 cylinder maybe its a four.

Well I finnally got around to hooking it back up. Guess what new starter wont crank now im lost. The dang thing was running when the starter busted out so now not sure what to do. Checked battery and we got juice but no crank even with the new starter.

Do you have the right shifter in the start position? What if you jump the terminals, the smaller one that the wire connects to, to the larger one the battery cable attatches, with a screw driver.

After all the reading on neutral switches I decided to pop the cap and take a look. Low and behold there was one of the wires loose on the switch. PUt it back on and fired right up.
