Sickle mower

Can someone give me some information on getting Massey Harris horse drawn no 7 sickle mower parts for restoration. The biggest current problem is getting the bearings to either buy or made up.

There will be a few people on working horse forums somewhere on the web, but I wouldn't presume to ever buy one off the shelf. If you can get the old ones off, and there is a bearing shop near you, he might find something that matches. A machine shop can turn brass replacements for you, but he would almost need the whole machine at his shop, unless you have good measurements and enough left of the old bearing. It can be done, but not over the counter as if it was a modern machine.

I Have all the old bearings but they have been badly rusted. I am currently soaking them in molasses to hopefully revive them. If I do have to reuse old bearings I probably wont be able to use the sickle. I have tried over the counter and whilst I have had a some success I wont be able to get all the bearings I want. Even with the successful ones I will still have to get bushes made up to take up the slack. I have priced brass bushes but at $600.00 just for the brass without the turning the cost will start mounting up.

G'day. I'm in Victoria. Might be able to help if you have precise dimensions. I can get bearings sorted out far cheaper than $600, though it would take a few weeks from start to finish. E-mail is open, I can send you details of the chap who makes them.

Hi, Sad farmall, when I was talking to the bearing supply he told me the bearings arent called bearings or needle rollers. He did mention the proper name that I cant recall now. The problem for them aside from the odd shaft sizes is the thickness of the actual rollers housed in the cages of the bearings. He did say these particular bearings are special in that they are designed to work in a slow turning environment, he reckons that if they were to spin fast they would fail. The exact dimensions I am looking for are 2 bearings 100 mm long with outside dimension of 56mm and inside dimension of 37mm ;- Also 1 bearing 87mm long & 1 bearing 60 mm long with outside dimension of 40mm & inside dimension of 27mm. I do know of at least 1 more problem I am going to have when I get closer to completion and that is the drive shaft from the crank to the blades is missing which will mean either making one at an engineers or finding one somewhere, can you help me there. I am not particularly great with emails and the computer in general what does Email is open mean.

G'day, to e-mail me you need to be on this forum in 'modern view'. Click on 'modern view' on the screen. Then when you look at my reply, you should see 'reply' 'profile' 'email'. Click on e-mail to send me a message. I'll see what I can find for you. Do you have an Owner's Manual? and Parts Manual? I have two McCormick Number 7 mowers. The link to the knife is a wooden pitman on McCormick mowers. Not too sure about Massey Harris, but shouldn't be too hard to find what you need.

Sadfarmall I found reply & profile but not email. I dont have a parts book. I have seen a couple of parts books/manuals on ebay america but i cant find a no7. With a bit more searching I might be able to find the nearest no to 7 and get that no. and hope for the best.

G"day. I have replied so that you can send me an e-mail message through Classic View. I could not find a manual either, but surely there are some out in the ether. Have you posted a message in "Implement Alley"? Leroy, who posts over there has a wealth of knowledge and can find some pretty rare parts.
