Anybody have any comments about a drott 40 track hoe
Man has one for sale it's running and he wants scrap price for it
Are they any good to use on a farm or are they obsolete as far as getting parts and such

There is a salvage place in southern Illinois that has plenty of parts for them, I just can't remember the name right now -- I had a case 880D, which is the same machine for many years and never had any problem getting whatever I needed, they are simple machines, mostly you will get water and mud in the final drives which just requires a little cleaning out. Does it have the case diesel engine?

I owned a Drott 50D for years and everything was still avalible from Case at the time I sold it.One major problem with the Drotts was the pillow block bearings on each side of the drive sprocket. The inner one was around $1500 and the outer one around $900 the last time I bought them. Most of the time they wreck the sprocket shaft when they go out and it was around $2000.One other real weak point was the turntable bearing. If it has any play in it the drive gear teeth for the swing will usually have some broken teeth. There is a little inspection cover close to the swing box that can be removed so you can see the teeth while someone swings it real slow.My old Drott was a big strong gorilla but it was slow as all get out.Mine was a 50000lb machine and I sold it to buy a newer 490E Deere which is a 28000lb machine.Even though the Deere is a lot smaller it will run rings around the Drott all day long.

I bought two new somewhere around 1975 at that time they were the real deal , now day the pilot operated machines are faster. As the other poster noted the pillow block bearings go out when run in mud and water. I found a good number from bearing supplier and cut the cost to 1/3 of his quoted cost. Most had 4 gear dana finals and were cheap to work on outside the bearings. The place in Ill. is CHARTRAND parts. There was a real nice case 880 on Nashville CL yesterday for $ 7,000 same machine but newer.
