International 685 electrical

Hi, my (European) Nashy 685 has just burnt out the charging lead fron alternator to common connector on starter solenoid (Brown/White or Brown/Yellow ?), its hard to tell when its burnt!!.
Any ideas??, if I just replace the wire is it going to do the same again?

Assuming Lucas Alternator.
Four things make that happen.
Diode rectifier bridge in the alt goes bad such that they let current pass through in both directions letting the battery discharge through the diode pack to ground (earth). The battery can pass hundreds of amps, smoking the wire.
The wire could have been corroded internally letting it heat up when charging current passes through it. Eventually it heats and smokes the insulation.
Hooking the battery backwards, or jumping the system with wrong polarity to ground (earth)
The alternator is not being regulated correctly and trying to charge radical amounts of volts.
the battery can be overcharged and ruined by this as well as too many amps flowing in the wire.
Two recommendations. Take the alt to a shop and have it tested.
Next use a fuse link in the connection to the alternator they are a modest sized colored wire rated for 10 amps more than the alt puts out. These are available in auto parts stores. They are cheap and easy to install. It is a fuse to protect the alternator. Jim
