Romance of it all

I've decided that new equipment has taken lots of feeling out of things. It may be nostalgia, but harvest with the old Massey combine and old truck felt way different growing up. Don't mention how much dirt was in the bottom of the bathtub from that dirty combine.

Don't get me wrong, I love the air conditioning and the fact that there haven't been any breakdowns. It sure is lots less stressful. I just ran the 58 GMC to town with a load of wheat and it was such a delight. The old girl doesnt go over 49 miles an hour, so it was a leasurly trip home (and way more leasurely on the way there with 200 bushels). I just don't get that in the big Freightliner with the radio on and the air blowing.

I love harvest.

Open station combines in 100+ heat, with dust and dirt boiling up into your fact- guess the romantic part of that routine sailed right on over my head.

Kind of reminds me of a cartoon I once saw- overweight guy in a stained T-shirt, in a dumpy apartment with cracked plaster and a bare light bulb hanging down over the table, where he's talking to a pollster: "No, we aren't poor, we're just trying to recapture the nostalgia of the '30's."

My brother and I use to ride along with our dad on his 1969 Gleaner "E" combine with no cab. Yes it was miserable but the joy and reward was just riding together and sharing the misery of the heat and dust. Dad always said the bean dust was the worst but I would have to say the corn dust on a still day is the worst.
When my brother and I were old enough to operate the combine by ourselves they thrill of it was great but the dust and heat seam to be worse since dad got to take the loads to the elevator and left us behind in the fields. But I would never trade any of these memories or experiences for anything now.

Two things can be said about the Good Old Days... Today people only want the good part of the old days and like Frank & Ernest in a comic strip once said, "You know what I like about the Good Ole Days"? No what is that? "I Wasn't Good and I Wasn't Old"...

I have two just like that one. One Green and one Red. The green one my Uncle bought new in 72(?). It is the one I use the most. The red one I bought about 4 years ago. It has what I call "farmer engineered" air conditioning. The previous owner took an airconditioner unit out of a mid 70"s pickup and mounted it outside the grain tank. I have not used it but I assume with freon it would work.
