1550 hydraulics for remote are slow

Hi All,

I got an oliver 1550 with hydralectric and 3pt. when i raise RPM's above 1200 the 3pt raises and lowers ok. Now when I put the rpms at 2200 it raises and lowers at spec 1.5 seconds. My problem is that when I hook up the remote (right side) to my double acting cylinder and raise my NH469 haybine with a 3"x8" cylinder it works fine at first but once I go and start working then it get slower and slower.

I verified that the bleeder is all the way in (the one that you unscrew a few turns for single acting cylinders). I made sure that the restrictors were set ok. So I decided I would check the filter and change the oil. Well the filter wasnt too bad but I ordered a new one. The book says to hook a hose to the drain plug and run the tractor till no more fluid. My drain plug won't come out so in my thinking, I thought "hay use the left remote and just squirt it into a can".

That is where i got confused...
I hooked up a hose and put it into a 5 gallon bucket, started the tractor and fluid started coming out the hose even though the spool is in it's centered position. When I move the spool to the other port the fluid stops and when I move it to the port with the hose, the fluid comes out fast.

Is this normal? I took the cover off and cleaned the spools, the balls all look fine so do the springs, the spools fit tight but slide easy, like the book says. I'm hoping that it is just the fluid is bad but I don't know.

Sorry so long winded but I hope that i filled in enough of the issue for some ideas....

Well welcome to the club all those things happen. You probably have a weak worn out pump. It seems like all the 1550/1650 tractors put some preasure and flow on the outlets when you don't touch the lever. It gets worse as the tractors age and get more hours.When you moved the lever one hole will push out fluid the other will let in fluid.The hydrolic oil goes to the power steering first then remotes then 3 point. So at low rpms the steering can take it all. your flow divider could be makeing problems too causeing the system to get hot.

I cleaned the remote spools and got all of the old fluid out, it was pretty milky at the bottom. after dropping the hydraulic housing on my toe, well it hit the dirt first and then my toe. thankfully I was in the yard and not on concrete. I cleaned it out and put new fluid and o-rings in it and it goe up and down better.

Tomorrow I'm going to hook it up to the haybine and work it a little. I thought it might be the pump but without having a pressure gauge i couldn't tell if there was a drop when it heated up. I'm hopping that I can get some time out of it before I have to rebuild the pump.

I just got through doing an in chassis on it and telling my wife that I won't need to ask her for more allowance for a while.

For what it's worth, when I asked my favorite dealer about the oil coming out of the outlet when the lever was centered, he said the system maintained 200 PSI on the remotes.

I hadn't thought of that on that old of a system but I had noticed that the couplers hook much easier with engine shut off.
