I do understand propane or the basics anyhow and have had a 930 Case LP for several years. Anyhow I tried to start a Moline G705 yesterday for the first time. I had to replace the vapor valve and the 80% valve as well as the liquid filler valve. I put about 5% in the tank and the tractor was not wanting to start and of course with the vapor valve on only. It tried but mostly smoke. It was around 60 degrees. I opened the 80% valve and liquid come out. I got to thinking maybe I was only getting cold liquid to the carb? This might be a stupid question but could the cooler temps be my problem?
 
Thinking about it more though when I turned it on and tightened the fitting going to the filter I did not see any liquid or any signs of sweating on the carb or lines ect. I am thinking I have a fuel system issue. Also the regulator is brand new. I will take the line going to the reg loose and see if liquid comes out with vapor only on.
 
Yes I did not expect a problem. If the weather does not get worse and I can get to the farm today I am going to check this out and see if I am getting vapor only out of it. I am thinking I was getting cold liquid only which could cause this problem. The tank was empty and no pressure on it. I did not even have to vent it to put fuel in. I am running out of ideas.
 
How is the air cleaner on it? Won't start with the oil bath removed or no oil in it.
 
It is all intact and clear with all new hoses ect but it does not have oil. I feel foolish but I had no idea it would keep it from running. This is the first time I heard about this. Is it only on an lp carb?
 
The LP regulator requires a slight vacuum (either 1/2" or 1 1/2" W. C. depending on model) to open to allow fuel to flow to the mixer. Without oil in the air cleaner there might not be enough vacuum at cranking to open the regulator.

A gasoline carburetor does not have this characteristic so it should work without the air cleaner attached.
 
I am not sure how cold it is where you are, but if I remember right, at -20 there is zero pressure from propane. You can carry it around in a pail as liquid. What is the temp?
Okay, I see that you were trying to run it at 60 deg. That won't be the issue then, sorry.
I have a propane pickup and a 400 Farmall LP and if I want to run them in the cold, I plug them in.
 
I've got a M670, had the same problem, only I've never seen a propane tractor smoke, until I installed a "high preformance" coil, now it starts on the 1st 1/4 turn even at 0 degrees.

The boiling point of propane is about -44°F.

Thanks Owen! I have forgot many things over the years and this is one of them!
 
I am interested in a high performance coil that sounds good. As far as the smoke I know it has to the the oil on the pistons. Glad to see it I know I had plenty in there to keep from starting it dry. Cold here today for Okla anyhow low 30s. I sure am wanting to hear it run and know that all is good with it. It has been a long enough wait..
 
Yes it was warm enough but the liquid comeing out of the 80% valve has me thinking something is not quite right. I only put about 5% in the tank. I am going to make sure that I am getting only vapor out of it with the only vapor valve on.
 
Never heard of that before. I have one I use as a puller, and I run it with a K&N style filter clamped on the carb. It starts right up, even without the filter.
