IH 1566 Hyd Update

Thanks guys - There is a link over to Red power maybe helps...you'd think it was me posting it - identical problem. Turned out to be his steering hand pump was bad. But he had a function dump valve to begin with...

I've reinstalled the rebuilt MCV with the aftermarket dump valve plug removed and the proper plastic valve and spring installed.

Yea - the PTO and 3pt work great - no problems there.

I drained all the fluid out of the tractor and I
Replaced the fluid with Napa premium - had a cheaper oil in there. You know just in case - Hell - I was halfway there anyway. While empty, I removed and looked at the hyd filter and screen which I replaced in aug/sept of this year - the screen was really dirty...surprisingly - looked like some gasket material or dirt...maybe one or two reflective bits of metal - but not much - it does tend to not like gear High 2 and grinds a bit when I try...

As noted above, during the rebuild of the mcv it became clear the former owner plugged the steering dump valve with an aftermarket steel plug - PRIOR TO ALL OF THIS - I never was able to move the front wheels w tractor engine off and the steering wheel would not move after a couple spins around around it would lock up but not steer.

So I removed that aftermarket plug and installed the dump valve plug and spring and replaced the now rebuilt MCV and I still have no steering, clutch or break pressure - but when the tractor is off - the steering wheel just spins and spins w NO resistance at all....

So Now I'm thinking I maybe have a bad hand pump behind the steering wheel - no fluid leaks - at least not now - right before the problem occurred one of the hyd lines was leaking pretty good but I tightened that up to stop fluid from dripping everywhere. Shortly after - my problems began...seemed unrelated til now.

for anyone wanting to make more fun of me...with NO diagram avail even in the I&T manual - I put the new plastic plug in - plastic plug first with rounded end toward the clutch housing (the plug kinda looks like a breneke shotgun slug) - you can see the backside of the plug where it looks like the spring fits (REAL tiny spring like off a ball point pen) that follows teh plug and is sticking out of the clutch housing waitng for the MCV to be reattached.

Which seemed to be the trick eh? Not crushing the spring - well I made guides (long drill bits) and checked it twice - seemed OK...

Tom just what to say that tractor has two pumps the MCV and a hitch pump that controls 3pt remotes, I belive the pto has its on mounted pump also. those types of problems can drive you crazy, I do have a IH service manual and can scan a specfic item for you if it will help cnt

Tom you said you pluged the dump valve , yea need the dump valve for ease of shifting . It dumps pressure off the T/A clutch pac.'s . Now as to the steering wheel just turning when there is no fluid it will do this . The sump check plug is suppose to hold oil up in the steering system . also there is a check valve under the fitting where the line goes . Before you put this all back together you should preprime the pump . It does not take but a little oil to do this. Also since you have had the clutch linkage off you will need to adjust everything . Clutch free travel , transmission brake and the DUMP VALVE . And as to your second gear problem that seams to be the problem with most of them . Now i am no expert on the 1566 as in my area there is only one and it is owned by the local I H dealer . So i have never been into the transmission on one But the rest of the tractor is pretty much the same . I am still thinking your problem is with the flow control valve . Now as to finding a pressure gauge , The gauges ya need are 1 0-5000 lb. ,(1) 0-600 lb gauge and it does not take 200-500 bucks to get one . As to the fittings take the bottom plug out and find a J I C fitting for it and where the dump valve sending unit goes find a pipe fitting for that one . that will be low pressure the bottom one will be high pressure . Ya want around 250-285 clutch pac loc up pressure and ya want real close to 2000 on the high side . You can find a pressure gauge at T S C or Farm and HOME , neat store that farm and home as i was in the one in Edina and Kirksville . Then ya need some small high pressure hose and a hand full of fittings. With everything ya need i do not think you will get more then 150 buck in it all. What i find hard to believe is that there is not someone that is like me that will make on farm service calls with out wanting half the farm to do so. I covered seven county's here in Eastern Ohio and a couple in Western Pa. along with doing contract labor for three dealerships . Plum run the wheels off three pickups , plus running to almost every big auction and consignment sale between here and western Il. If you want to talk to me send me and E/Mail @ tractor_ [email protected] and i'll give you my cell # and yes it is a Mo. cell , thats a LONG story why i have a Mo. cell# and Live in N/E OHIO. I will be out at the farm here in a little bit as we are going to be Picking corn and i should be home sometime around 9 this evening .

Thanks a bunch - I have guage on order...so hopefully I will have that soon...for some measured pressures.

I believe my problem is with the steering system. I used the tractor last spring and the steering gave me some trouble...once on the road returning from the farm I was working on, and then twice hauling two different gigantic stumps (one so large it ripped a logging chain in tension).

They were very fast losses - came back quick.

When it re-presented this fall - I was able to warm the fluid by driving up and down the driveway 5 or 6 times and pressure finally came back...

Then that didn't even work.

It looks like the MCV draws off the reservoir of the tractor...If you had anything that would be worthwhile - it would be a hydraulic diagram for the tractor showing where test ports might be and maybe could understand the hydraulic systems interaction, then work my way thru the system...Once I get the guage and fittings.

Woke up this am...Did a bunch of NON tractor stuff around the house...

Then went and started the tractor - let it idle for around 10 minutes or so...

Tried to steer - was just turning the steering wheel lightly - then it got firm...kinda hard...then it wouldnt' move...then I heard a pump kick on...sound like its right near the starter...and boom! Instantly...Full steering, brake and clutch....turned wheels full left and right and leak sprang out of the steering cylinder connection....

I don't know if I have it fixed or not...I've left it idling for the past 20 minutes and will go see...

So...at least right now...I don't know if I have it fixed...but I am pretty sure I haven't made it worse...
