Welp... Replaced the hyd steering pump and the exact same problem persists.... No steering, no brake, no clutch assist....its tryin like before....sometimes it gets a little.... But it did that w the old pump too.

What to check next?

Hi
Just wondering if this is the same set up as A 966. Had a customers in the shop, lost brakes steering and pto. found out it had stripped the splines that take the drive to the pto and hyd pump drive off the back of the clutch cover.

When I fixed it and told the guy what happened, he said some times it was slow to work and once in a while it had made a funny noise.

The noise was the splines stripping as they slipped. I wonder if yours is still dragging the drive a bit and thats why it tries a bit, then slips with load when the pressure comes up a bit and it don't work.
It could also be pulling air at a filter or pipe fitting too from comments Ive read round here i guess.

not too sure on this does it have 2 pumps one feeding the other and the other pumps weak like happens with the deeres and its not priming the other properly. Im kinda in the dark on this part right now my books out on loan so i can't go look for you to find out.
Regards Robert

Does your 3 point work?how about PTO?If they dont work then the PTO drive is stripped out of the pressure plate. That will require a 'split'.If they still work, you prrobably have an air lock,or are sucking air at the oring passage between the transmission/rear end housings.Add 5 gallon or so above the full mark.Common 'fix' on IH tractors. These are the most likely causes of your problems.

Check the pressure output at the pump them move out till you loose pressure some where along this line you are having trouble and you just have to trace it out like finding a short in tail light. Sounds like a pressure release valve is stuck open look to see if there is one somewhere along the line of power to the system.

I don't have the foggiest idea how to check pressure at the pump - do you mean the steering pump? Is there a port for that? I have the shop manual but don't really see where I can get a gauge in there...

Also - yes...the PTO works fine and the 3pt works fine too - but the 3pt is slow - I've got a ripper on the back of it that weighs around 3000lbs and the hitch takes about 10 to 30 seconds to start lifting it - then it lifts it...Once its all the way up - it leaks down every couple minutes and pops it right back up - I guess the 3pt cylinder has a leak but I wouldn't suspect that would affect my steering especially since i was ripping for 6 days and steering just fine...

Once the oil is hot - lifts it faster.

Alright - I found in the manual where to check pressure on the MCV - not sure it is clear to me how to move out from there...and what kind of gauge am I looking for - I don't have one...Can I get one at NAPA? are the threads common?

Also - I cannot steer the tractor manually - there is NO steering at all - the steering will turn but the wheels do no - when it tries to finally grab with power steering - the steering system seems to have some memory of where I steered or tried to turn the wheels to as even tho I may try to steer opposite - the wheels just turn where I first tried to steer...
