John Deere L110 Cuts-off When Hot

My L110 riding mower cranks fine and runs like a top for 10-20 minutes then something kills the engine and it will not crank again until it has cooled-off. The motor will turnover, it just won't fire. There is normlly a puff of blue smoke out of the muffler when it dies. I have had it at the local John Deere dealer twice and they cannot duplicate the problem. They cleaned the carberator and fuel system and replaced the fuel filter the first time I had it in.

Next time problem happens while eng still hot,sit on tractor crank eng & try to start,while doing this have a helper/someone check for spark at plug,if no spark,if eng has a pressure sw on oil filter adapter disconnect sw & crank eng,if still no spark with sw disconnected then ign coil breaking down from heat/going bad & needs replacement.

If you have spark with pressure sw disconnected then problem in lube system,possible causes-plugged/restricted oil filter,worn oil pump,internal wear in eng causeing loss of oil pressure when eng gets hot,bad sw or wrong wt oil in eng.

Kevin,
three thoughts.
1. Make sure the vent hole in your head cap is not plugged. This will Rob the engine of gas and cause it to die. The hole is in the direct center of the cap and is the size of a paper clip. If it is plugged, clean it.
2. You may be losing spark. This machine has a magneto ignition system that is not oil pressure protected. All you need for the tractor to run is the pto lever turned off and the park brake locked. Run it till it dies then check for spark right away. An online spark tester works the best. If you have no spark then replace the coil.
3. It sounds like your John Deere dealer is not so Brite. That Model has been around long enough that they should have known to do these tests. Sometimes it pays to drive farther to a better dealer.

Tim,
The vent in the gas cap was the first thing I checked because I had that happen before. Based-on my search of other forums, it sounds like either the fuel shutoff solenoid or the coil, so I am probably just going to replace both and be done with it. The parts aren"t that expensive. Thanks for your help!

Tim I have had them not get hot enought running under NO load. Some times you have to be actually mowing to get them to quit.
