Always acts like battery is weak when you try to crank it over.Had alt.rebuit starter checked, new cables and battery .but still cranks slow and may have to hook up to charge to get enough juice to start

Have you checked and cleaned all 4 or 6 battery cable connections depending if tractor has 1 or 2 batt? I recommend changing battery negative cable connection from batt box to engine block or starter mounting bolt.

yes,i only have 1 12volt battery was it equiped with 2.Someone told me you have to turn steering wheel to relieve pressure.that sounds like poor design.

Either put a new, longer cable to the tractor chassis or place a atrap for the chassis to the negative cable. And make sure the connections are clean- use a rotary wire brush on a drill to shine the metal. And make sure the new battery has enough amp hours to crank the engine easily.

Depending on location that tractor was sold when new it could have had 1 or 2 batteries when sold new. Yes turning the steering wheel while cranking can relieve hyd pressure on a hyd system that is functioning exactly as designed BUT so can turning a destroking screw(part key #4).

I bought and still have the next size larger, the 2440 when it was less than three years old. It came with two batteries and always spins the engine "like nobody's business"! I would think that there is room for two 12-volt batteries in parallel in your 2240. Add one.

Running one battery where two are required is also bad design.
Rocking the steering wheel is a farmer fix on a 30+ year old machine that needs a seal or valve replaced. Hardly a surprise a 30+ year old machine may seep some oil.
As previously stated the chassis return/ground bolted to sheet metal doesn"t conduct after 30+ years.
Use a volt meter to find voltage drops. You can shine and buff all you want but that doesn"t find problems.
Test the coolant for corosion inhibiter not just for freeze protection. If the coolant is old, the engine sleeves will pin hole and leak.
Clean the transmission screen and change the transmission filter. Change the oil too. Contaminated oil or a plugged filter will ruin everything that oil touches.
As the operator"s manual has been lost by some slob. The nice folks at 1-800-522-7448 will print or send a CD of another. Parts book is online at the JD web site.

You should have two batterys, also some tractors are equiped with a solenoid in place of the de-stroke valve #4 in the parts picture, if you have got one, make shure it works.
