point setting on a 1949 8N with a front mounted distributor

This tractor has suddenly started to run on two cylinders. We rebuilt thr carb and replaced the distributor cap and rotot whuich had been damaged when the cap came loose on one side. hoe do you work on the points when you can"t see them ? ordo think we have a different problem ? i will appreciate help from any of you experts Thank you Ken

Most common problem is probably swapped wires.
Firing order 1243 CCW with #1 being closest to the radiator.
Just two bolts to take the distributor off, set it on your work bench and do the points.
You can just unsnap the distributor cap and let it hang there.
When you put it back on, the offset tang on the back of the dist will only go in one way. (unless you force it to the point of breaking it)
I take the wire loose on top of the coil and take the coil off with it.
Make sure the coil contacts are making good connections and the gaskets
are in place while on the bench then put it back on.
Timing adjustment is in the I&T FO-4 manual.
If you don't have one, it would be a good idea to get one, but it is the slider on the side of the distributor.
Set it in the center and it will run.
