Anyone have any suggestions or experience with any of the advertised splitting stands? I am in the market and would appreciate any and all responses. Thank you.

Have three here at the dealership. All depends on what they do. If the shop floor is good the ones with rollers work however the one with the tract that lays down also works good. Bigest thing is how long it takes to go from one model tractor to the next. How many tractors do you split in a year..?

I need to split the SM I have and don't mind spending the money to do it safely. I have never come across a used one so have started looking at new. This is my winter project this year.

I built one 5-6 years ago out of mostly scrap.done 10 or so tractors with it.All the way from SC to 1256.

Someone, perhaps Hobo, posted pics a few months ago of one he built out of a trailer jack and an adapter plate designed to bolt into the side of the the rear housing. That's what I am going to do for my next split.

I used two spare frame rails and a 6x6 piece of wood to split my
Farmall 300. I needed to move the engine and front end sideways
and found that old wrist pins work great as rollers in the Egyptian
style.

Make shift works but the right tools make the job easier.Dufus thinks you can do a valve job with 2 screw drivers.I have the Ford bar,A driver that reaches around the valve to drive a stubborn valve guide , a puller to pull valves with mushroom stems when the guide is stuck.A tool to pull stuck guide retainers.A fixture to grind the ends of valve stems square when more clearance if needed.Try opening the gas lines on modern vehicles with out the right tool.Dufus posted that he was going to cut all the valve stems off mushroom stem valves.Only way he could get the valves out.

Removing keepers is a different ball game than splitting a tractor...
A stand has it's advantages. It's also pretty worthless if it can't be adjusted for the steed you're about to split. Two floor jacks, two round blocks of wood and two wedges for the front axle have an amazing capacity to get the job done... provided one is carefull to NOT knock the engine off the jack/block.
