Is it the video of that 518000 pound oak tree? Had 2 cat dozers and 3 cat track hoes moving it? My dad showed me that this week it was pretty neat!

You know, I'm torn between that being impressive, and being such a waste of resources and govt money.

Seems pretty shallow box for a oak tree, would think they need to water that fella for years to come to keep it green. Could just plant another tree and have something for the next 100 plus years for a lot less money, feed some hungry or something with the rest....

But impressive show, that is for sure, thanks for the link, sure wouldn't have wanted to be in the dozers when they putit in the new hole, that looked a bit scary.

That is quite a feat. Lucky no huge wind gusts came up. Hope its close to a water source for the next few years til it gets re-established.

Here's what was done with a large tree in way of sidewalk project. Town has history of 100 yrs oil production.

Very impressive move. However I"m rather sceptical as to the long time survival of the tree. A tree that size has a root system that reaches far boyond the "drip zone", and they moved only half that much. Trees don"t usually die like an animal (all at once), but rather by inches over a long period of time. My bet is that in a few years you will see top limbs die off, and decay will spread on down till it is all gone.

After losing nearly 10,000 MILES of power lines across New England a year ago, I want to start a campaign to keep every tree on the planet their own height away from lines and pavement- and water and sewer lines while they're at it.
That was sickening- dangerous and costly- and really dumb to think about replanting any in their place.
. Maybe like Monty Python would say 'perhaps a nice shurbery insted'.....

Let me guess... The moving company has a relative on the council that decided this would be money well spent to move their cherished tree. Or maybe there was a squirrels nest or bats living in the thing so PETA wouldn't allow it to be cut down?

All that to widen a road? Couldn't squeeze an extra lane in really?
What a waste of taxpayer dollars.

Sure... It was a magnificent tree. Take a few pictures and cut it down. Maybe make a nice table or mantle for some local historic house or something and keep a picture of the donor tree on top of it... But to move that thing was a monumental waste of money.

Those movers probably get a lot of good laughs when they tell that story. "...And then all the towns people came with tears of joy in their eyes and gave the big tree a great big hug!"

Oh well... Hope the tree makes it after all that. Really doubt it... but let's hope so.

I think it was impressive to watch, but I don't think taxpayer dollars should have been used for something like this.
I would understand if a wealthy private company or something did this.

It would be just like karma to have a tornado hit it next spring and rip it out of the ground... :lol:
