Pastures get enough poo but need some nitrogen and a couple of fields I do hay need some help..... Guy at the feed store said in spring and I was planning for that, but saw a guy fertilizing today and asked... He said it didn't matter if you do it now or wait til spring and said it's best to do it now cause the spring is supposed to be wet.............

What do you folks do.... fall or spring??????????

That's the way we get it down here. These 2 help the systems you have in your field survive the winter. Problem with fert. late and early around here is the fact that the weeds go nuts......but my cows eat weeds, the tender succulent morsels that the tree huggers classify as wild flowers.

I do it when I have the product, the money, and get the urge. I am a non-professional non-professional farmer.

(quoted from post at 16:34:17 10/06/12) I do spring. I'll let the experts come along with their lectures later.

I fertilize in the spring also, since most of my farmland is flood prone. If we do get a bunch of snow, all my N runs downstream.
The last 10 years, i have the Coop apply the dry fertilizer and impregnate the herbicide in it as well. I kill 2 birds with one stone that way.

I spread 200lbs fertilizer and 20lbs rye grass per acre around the
15th of this month. Then another 400lbs per acre fertilizer only in
March.

I'm just outside Houston TX

This is based on soil testing and recommendations from my
fertilizer guy.

It took several years but my pasture looks great and produces well.
Except during last years drought.

old rule of thumb about fertilizer leaching was nitrogen goes in a run, potash in a walk and phosphorus in a crawl
