Ferguson TO-30 Engine Speed

Dad has a TO-30 that won't stay at set throttle
speed. Will be running just fine with throttle set
then all of the sudden it will just drop a few
hundred RPMs. The throttle itself is not
moving...friction discs are new and you can have you
hand on the throttle making sure its not moving and
engine still jumps around. Is this a distributor or
governor problem? Has good power and runs strong so
im thinking worn distributor. Thanks for any and all
help!

Sounds like a governor problem. Check for binding in the linkage between the throttle plate and the gov arm. It should move smoothly from idle to wide open.

There could still be a problem inside the gov. The spool fits in a hole in the end of the cam. There is a vent hole in the cam, if it's carboned up the gov will be sluggish.

Check the Throttle and Governor linkage for worn parts, especially the holes. If there is wear here it will be floating around all over the place. Make sure with the engine stopped and the throttle wide open, that the throttle linkage moves very easily and isn't catching anywhere. You need to check this linkage GENTLY, don't use any pressure to move it as the engine doesn't do that. Check the two springs that they are in good order especially the one that is in the vertical Rod from the Governor. If it is damaged in any way that would cause it. You should re-set the Governor Linkage, if you need the info to do that, email me at the address below and I will send it to you.. John(UK).. [email protected]

This tractor doesn't get used much, especially now that its not running right. I think we went through the governor adjustment procedure last year but I don't think it would hurt to go through it again. Maybe we missed something! Thanks
