TO 20 transmission problem

It has been awhile since I have posted to the forum. Always received a lot of good useful information here. I recently purchased a very well used TO20. Owner told me everything worked as it should. Tractor was not running at the time so like a dummy I took his word for it. Transmission does not shift into reverse. The transmission starter switch has been replaced with a starter solenoid. Is there anything that I can do to fix other than rebuild the transmission? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Whoever changed the Safety Switch probably couldn't find a genuine one, they were in short supply at one time and all kinds of lash ups were done. But you can get a switch easily from this site. But if it won't go into reverse, the switch is on the same selector rail as Reverse and it may just be that the Selector Rail is seized where it passes through the Transmission housing. If you remove the Transmission cover and then try moving the Reverse selector rail. you may have to clamp something onto it and try to twist it gently to free it. But won't move very much, but it may free if you try and use plenty freeing oil. If it doesn't work it will mean the tractor being split...John(UK). [email protected]

Two things.
Clutch go into reverse with engine off?
Clutch might be out of adjustment.
I believe, believe I have seen a fergy shifter that the handle has to be pulled up to get into reverse.
this works to keep from grinding the flywheel when pulling out of the "S" position.
I am in search of THAT shifter.
