Revisit Onan genset----dangerous carb

I posted recently about a 1956 JA series Onan. It starts easy and runs fine, however on a couple occasions it has been spurting gas out a little hole on top of the carb. When this happens I just wait a while to restart and it seems ok.

I've never seen a carb puke gas out externally, seems like most carbs will dump fuel internally.

I'm wondering if maybe when I cleaned the carb initially with compressed air that maybe a plug got blown out of the hole? The hole is near the top adjusting screw and appears to be less than .090" dia.

If you used compressed air before taking the carb apart, you may have partially collapsed the float. Now the float cannot float and shut the fuel off and the bowl is overfilling.

Better take carb apart and check float.

Are you sure it is not an AJ. Because I don't think the J units came out until 1957-1958.I know of no Onan carb that has a hole in the top.

Onan tech since 1980

It's a 205AJ and you told me it was mfg. May 1956 but that's no big deal to me.

The carb was apart when using the air, just thinking mabe a pin was pressed in hole when new and the air blew it out. It squirts fuel toward the air cleaner.

Sorry bout that. I have to many irons in the fire.I do believe that carb did have a plug on the outside I will have to check. But it sounds like you have a sticking float.

You guys were right about the float, found a pinhole while it was apart. I tapped the mystery hole and plugged it with a set screw. All things considered this engine sure seems to start easy and run good.
