coil for briggs?

I ordered a Sparktron pointless magneto coil from ebay for my 5 hp Briggs..could get no spark from the new coil. They sent me another coil...still no spark. 2 bad coils in a row??? What else could be the problem?

Did you check the magnetism on your magnets? Use a flatblade screwdriver it should attact that screwdriver with a lot of effort. Hal

Bad magnet on the flywheel?? Shear key broken that times the flywheel??? Do you have the gap set correct between the flywheel and mag?? Any and all can cause you problems. A few weeks ago I put a mag off a 17hp B/S engine onto an older point type engine so as to do away with the points. At first I did not think it would work but it works great and the engine starts on the 2nd pull most of the time

I checked on ebay for coil you bought, could not find a listing for same,IF this coil is same/similar to the oem briggs magnetron conversion kit for a points type ign system, the problem may not be the coil, the briggs/aftermarket conversions will not work on many mod briggs eng due to a reverse polarity on flywheel magnets or magnet timing, this problem has been brought up several times before in the past on this forum,IF you have kill lead connected to coil, disconnect kill lead at coil & check for spark,if you have spark now, then problem in ign sw,safety sw's or wiring harness, still no spark with kill lead disconnected then problem on eng either due to weak/damaged flywheel magnets, reversed magnet polarity, incorrect flywheel/coil air gap, make sure coil has good clean ground connection to block.

Check the flywheel magnet, if its and older engine the flywheel magnet maybe segmented (a magnet a blacnk area and a magnet) if this is the case a magnetron coil will not work but if you switch the flywheel to a one piece magnet it will work like a charm.

One other thing no one mentioned:

In the Olden days people set the flywheel gap with a business card or some such.

A business card is really about .016 thick.

Some of the modern coils will not make a spark with this gap, but will run great if you get the gap down to about .010 with a feeler gauge.

OK-looked at coil at ebay & briggs service manual for eng models listed in ad,briggs service manual shows 2 different style coils used, one has an exposed trigger, other has trigger enclosed in coil assembly, although coil you have looks nothing like oem coil I would suspect trigger enclosed in new coil,if no installation instructions included with coil, set air gap for .012",if still no spark try removing coil & rotate same 180 deg & reinstall on eng(if possible),set air gap for .012" & check for spark, trigger in coil may be faceing wrong way in position it is now in and is probably sensitive to magnet polarity.
