2554 Scotts Garden Tractor Kohler 25HP Flywheel

I had two punches inserted into two holes on top of flywheel to hold flywheel in place while attempting to remove the PTO clutch. The tip of one punch broke off and fell down below flywheel. I can turn flywheel by hand & flywheel turns freely. I have not tried to start the engine. Does anyone know any reason why I should retreive the broken tip before starting engine. If I have to remove the flywheel, does anyone any tips on how to do it? I belong to the 8n/9n forum. Have 1952 8N & 1940 9n (Both Restored) 1987 843 working Bobcat. Your suggestions are appreciated.
 
I don"t understand why you would hold the flywheel to remove the clutch, BUT, if your punch tip is only in the 1/4 inch range then go ahead and run it. Any bigger than that and you need to remove the flywheel.
 
Thanks for the fast reply. Sorry about the 2 extra posts. I had to use punches to keep the flywheel from turning, while removing the PTO chutch. I hope this makes sense. The broken punch is a Craftsman 7/32. The broken end of the punch is about 3/8". The other end, under the flywheel might taper to 1/4" Dia and 1" long? Where is a good place to buy a flywheel puller? Thanks again for the help.
 
Do you have a small magnet? If you do you might get out with it. The punch was most likly made of steel. If its around the flywheel it might stick to the magnets on the flywheel.
 
Measure distance between center of crankshaft & center of tapped puller bolt hole in flywheel,if distance 1 3/4" or less goto link below & type 37824 in search,I use this tool to pull flywheels on many mod briggs & tecumseh eng,check website & see if any stores close to you,to hold flywheel goto kohler engine website & download a service/repair manual for your eng,in section 2 it will tell you how to make a flywheel holder from an old flywheel ring gear or use a strap wrench to hold flywheel.

I have a small magnet, but cannot get under the flywheel. Thanks for your help. I will go town and buy a puller from H.F. about 8 miles from here.
 
Joe Csuti, I measured distance and it came out to 1 1/2". I will go to town today & pick up #37824 at H.F. about 8 miles from my place. I will keep you informed. Thanks for the great info. This is a GREAT Forum.
 
I would recommend remove the flywheel and retreive the punch. The broken piece could damage the magnets on the flywheel or damage the stator.

Either is a pretty expensive fix and a good puller can be had cheaper.

If you ever remove another clutch bolt, just remove a sparkplug and stuff a foot or so of recoil rope in there to lock the engine while you remove the bolt.

Then torque the bolt to 55 ft. lb. if it 7/16" when you reinstall the clutch.

Then remove the rope and reinstall the sparkplug. May have to turn the engine a bit to get the rope to come free.
 
Thanks for the info. I now have the flywheel loose, but it looks like I have to remove the 2 pick-up coils to remove the flywheel. What is the gap between magnet & pick-up coil? I sprayed the 4 allen bolts with paint to mark the position of the 2 coils. Will the paint trick work just as well or using a gage for the gap? Thanks to all of you for your great help. Joe Csuti: Engine is CV725S. I removed flywheel,and found lower part of punch inside (Was 1/4" Dia by 1" long !!). Found one of 6 curved magnets was not glued to inside of flywheel (Magnet was not damaged, just stucked to little coils around a lot of coils around crankchaft). I think I broke seal/glue when turning flywheel while using puller. Can this magnet be glued back on, or do I buy a new flywheel? All of you have been a great help. Again, this is a great Forum. Thanks from San Diego Ca. Hour meter shows over 1100 hours, used on 5 acres, and still going strong.
 
Magnets coming loose is kinda a common problem on Kohler engines, so probably did not knock it loose. If you mark where the magnet is supposed to be, you can clean the flywheel and magnet, get some good epoxy adhesive and carefully put it back in place. The magnets are for charging, they have nothing to do with the engine running.
 
If eng a cv725 the coil air gap is .011"-.013"

Before you epoxy magnet back in confirm magnet north pole faceing same direction as north pole on other magnets,otherwise you'll be bucking other magnets & this will affect alt output/operation.You can check magnet polarity & other magnets polarity position with a pocket compass.
