TO35 lost all power after fuel tank replacement?

In an effort to combat an eternal struggle against a rusted gas tank, I finally broke down and purchased a new tank. However, after installing the tank my TO35 has no "umph!" Idle is great, although it sounds a little diesely (if that's a word.) And even high engine speeds in neutral are ok, but the rev is slow to increase and pops a lot.

But most importantly, when using the PTO and/or moving, the tractor has no power at all. It barely moves under its own power and if I'm on an incline it runs at extremely slow engine speed without any response from the gas lever.

I've tried adjusting the carb multiple times, and I cleaned it prior to replacing the tank. I bought a rebuild kit as my last effort, but I was wondering if anyone else might have any thoughts or suggestions?

does the new fuel tank have a vented cap???????

if the tractor slows down or quits running, immediately take the gas cap off and listen for a swish of air entering tank,

if so, replace fuel tank cap with a vented cap.

otherwise, look for trash in the lines

If all you did was replace the tank then I'd say there is crud in the fuel line or some got knocked loose and is plugging up the carb. One way to check that is to take the line off the carb and turn the fuel on, draining it into a can. Make sure you have a solid, steady flow. Just a trickle is not enough.
I had something similar with my TO35 after soaking, cleaning and rebuilding the carb. I ended up taking it apart a second time and was extra careful to make sure all the passages were clean. Once put back together it was a world of difference, it had it's bark back!

I got something else for you to look at. Under the front of the tank is the governor/ throttle linkage 'hook'... sometimes a spring on here is missing etc, and throws people a curve, but if your new tank is a bit off on dimensions, or the cast mounting bracket needs more washers or thicker welting, it might just rub enough to bind up the motion the governor needs... or I could be just lost in space once again...
