When purchased the adjustable lift arm, right side, along with a PTO Shaft cover. I won't fit, way too small. I thought maybe I was not putting in on correctly so I just let it go. My previous occupation involved cranes and hoists. The PTO shaft has me a bit freaked out, if it get a hold of you, it's gonna be bad. Anyway, while changing the fluids out. I cleaned the collar and shaft, then retried the cover, bummer, nope. The collar is a different color, a fairly decent amount of gray paint unlike the rest of the differential. It looks like a replacement, no threads for a cover at all. Maybe I can make a hinged box or something to cover it up. Thoughts?

Is your pto an 1 1/8" or 1 3/8"? If it has an 1 3/8" pto it could very well be an aftermarket piece and you would have to find one that matches it, or it may not have ever been threaded for one since I would say at least 80% if not more are ran without their cover on the pto.

This problem has come up before , absence of threads for the pto cover on the collar is usually caused by an implement drive shaft coupling wearing them away.

that is what happen to mine, 1957 TO-35,

my old bush hog pto shaft worked loose and rode up the tractor pto shaft and ruined the threads on the housing.

lucky for me it did not come off

but I have never been able to get the pto safety cap to screw back on, its been that way for years and has not been a problem.

on the to-35 you do not have to keep the pto turning when you are using the lift.

if I had to keep the pto turning all the time, it might be more of a safety problem.

Thanks for the responses. How is the shaft measured, across the top of the splines? For safety I want to put something over it when not use the shaft. It's to easy to be doing something and forget it's turning.

I have seen ones similar to these fitted to TE20's and TO 30's http://www.silverfoxtractorspares.com/massey-ferguson-tractor-135-pto-guard-13804-p.asp

When you say way to small if you mean it hits the shaft before it screws in, you have the wrong cap.Ford used a short cap about 3" long Ferguson used one about 5"long. If it's thread diameter you got me I dunno.
