JD 350B Dozer/Crawler

There's a fairly decent-looking dozer for sale in a front yard in rural Wisconsin. I'm really interested in making an offer to use on my own property.

It is said to have about 2800 hours, a 3-cylinder diesel, and runs good. A 1971 vintage.

However, I know next to nothing about dozers. Can any of you experts out there suggest a few things to check out to make sure I'm not picking up a major money-pit?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

JD Crawler board has some very sharp people. Post your questions over there or do a search and you will find a lot on the 350B.

The weakest link on the dry steering clutch dozer/loaders are the steering clutches..You can test them for slippage if you pull a steering lever back and stand on the brake at the same time. The dozer should pull way down or stall if they're in working order.Try the other side too.. If the machine stops moving and engine rpm's remain high it's showing slippage in the oposite side that the lever is being pulled..Also check for cracks in the main engine frames.. These extend from the hard nose to the final drive housings..Look for broken / missing bolts associated with the frames and clutch housing side and underneath bolts..Check oil levels.. Reverser is the stubby dipstick directly underneath the air cleaner cover.. This only holds 9 qts. so make sure oil is up to snuff. Rear end oil is the dipstick on the floor by your left heel when sitting on the seat.. Most crawler sales are because of worn out undercarriages.. i.e. pins and bushings , broken worn track links, sprockets worn to a point, bottom rollers loose, track adjusters leaking/broken..front idlers loose/worn out...

This is great input. Thank you. Let me know if you think of anything else.

Would be great if you contacted me directly by e-mail as I'd show you the link to the pics/listing. I'll be checking it out next weekend.
