Cat 955L leaking transmission seal

As you're taking the engine out, take note of any shims under the rear engine mounts. These shims are for locating the rear of the motor, to minimize the mis-alignment of the drive coupling. Remove the drive blocks and inspect them closely. Any cracks or dry-rot, replace them. They're pretty dear at $80 apiece, but remember, they never break when the weather is dry, warm and sunny. You have to fix it where it breaks, unless you happen to have something bigger you can pull it around with.

Are you sure which you are talking about. Transmission or torque convertor? Where is the leak?

Yes, make sure to take note of those shims, if misaligned, those drive blocks will come apart in short order, recalling from memory, while running a 955, that just had an engine overhaul, this happened 2x, once with a line of trucks to get loaded, and that was the cause.

If you mean the seal in the front of the torque converter just take out the coupling. Drill and use sheetmetal screws to pull it out. Make sure the shaft isn't wobbeling around on failed bearings. Can get sleeve to cover worn groove in flange.

There doesn't appear to be a coupling just a spline from the engine direct to the tourque converter. If I took a picture could you confirm?

Naturally, try what Bob says first. I didn't think taking the blocks out would give enough room to slide the flange off.

if it is a 995 L you can pull the torque or tranny with out touching the engine. all 955 K & Ls have a flex coupling between the engine and TC. replacing the seal is a simple job I can scan the article from the service manual. there is a wear sleeve that can be installed on the TC input flange to take care of any wear on the seal surface

Do you have a part # for the TC input flange wear sleeve ?

Not all of the fellows that posted to this thread are around and the ones that are might not remember all the discussion.

You would help yourself by starting your own post and fully describe your needs. This site uses two different views. Modern View brings old posts to the "top". People using Modern view will see your post and the original post you are tagged onto, so they see the "whole" story related to your post. People using the Classic view only see your post as "Re" to the original post, if they see it at all, none of that original post since Classic does not bring old posts to the top like Modern does; they stay in the list where they were posted in time, where your post shows as current. People, using Classic, can swap over to Modern to see the original post, but likely many will not bother to do that.

If you have the new seal a bearing supply house may be able to match up a sleeve using the seal dimensions.

I have never known Cat to supply the ware sleeve, take the seal and the flange to your local bearing supplier, the sleeve is known as a speedi sleeve, they will know what to give you and if possible get them to press the sleeve on for you.
