New to crawlers but looking for one to get for about one year now. Considering one that is advertised as having new tracks and as having some engine work done. In talking to the owner found out the tracks and sprockets are for a 350 and less than 1000 hours on engine work. Asking price is higher than I have ever seen for a 440 C gas (or diesel for that matter). Owner says he has put so much money into it........ Trying to get pics of the crawler before traveling almost 3 hrs. one way to look it over. I am asking for your thoughts on what to look for and a realistic offer.

How much are they asking ?

And do you want one for a collector or to use ? loader or blade ?

Wasn't too long ago I saw what seemed like a decent 350 with a loader on the ohio craigslist. I usually look on the mansfield, akron, columbus, cleveland ones it must of been on one of those ?

Mike,

The crawler has a blade. I want it as a collector but will use it in the woods much the same as my tractors are used. The most I have ever seen as the asking price for a 440 was 6500 in GM, he wants way more than that because of what he has invested. Waiting now for pics.

Don't we all wish we could get back what we invested !

Wonder if he rebuilt the final drives and steering clutches ?
The finals in those went through at least 3 changes beefing them up more every time. Ones with the diesels I'm told were harder on the finals because they had more power.
We had a 440 gas with a loader. Good in tight spots and lifted ALOT of weight for it's size. But they were underpowered and kinda slow. Just don't be in a hurry trying to move dirt.Seemed like just when we had it all fixed something else would yet break. Ours like most likely had a hard life early on.

Forget it. He wants what he has in it back, but it's not worth that much. For something up in the $6500.00+ area you can find a good working, more modern rig. I have more in my 40C and 1010C than I could ever get back out of them.

Not your obligation to bale him out on his mistake. Unless collecting is your big thing find something newer for less bucks.
