Cover crop or not

In spring for sure.

Lot are doing a fall alfalfa seeding here, I can see getting by without the cover on that. Less weed pressure and less odds of a bad rain event in fall here.

Where I am the growing season is so short, its trouble to find a crop you can plant and harvest by September to get the alfalfa planted by mid September.

Even silage its pretty late cant get the alfalfa in.

Used to be peas was popular or even sweet corn but then they shut the canning plant down out of the blue here so its hard to find a contract.

Small grains arent popular here, corn is king and beans will pay the bills and thats about it.

I think we are going to go with a cover crop always used to but I have done it both ways on this field really trying to keep weed pressure down

I dont know why you couldnt plant alfalfa under corn or beans other than having to go over the field twice and I guess losing your weed control options

Too much shade, we do a bit of that under seeding for cover crop experiments but the alfalfa would be very uneven and poor growing. We often are finishing harvesting corn after a snow and cold so there just isnt any recovery time for the alfalfa.

For a good alfalfa stand you need to concentrate on a good seedbed and good growing conditions to make a good strong alfalfa stand.
