Working ground

What would you guys use for working up a garden that was tilled last year? I know getting a tiller is easiest but I like driving my tractors and wonder
how they did Id before tillers. Also what implements do I need to replant a hayfield? Looking at putting 5 acres of something in to square bale and
sell. Thinking Timothy but not sure yet. I think it would be fun to work the ground and put in a new stand hopefully without chemicals. Thank you for
any help

My garden is big enough to get into with a tractor and plow. I plow it, run a disk and then a harrow over it once each and then I have a 4ft rotiller on my little tractor to go over it and get the lumps out. My dad did the same thing when I was growing up except no pass with a tiller. As to your hay field, what is currently in it and for how long. If its just useless sod at the moment and been that way for a long time I would do something for a season to break that up before planting hay. Depending on what it currently is you could have something like quack grass that plowing won't kill and probably a lot of weeds. Could have poor soil fertility also.

A plow works up tough ground like sod and leaves it rough. A chisel plow works good in ground that isnt sod, not quite as rough as a plow. Might work 8 inches deep give or take.

A disk works up lighter ground or lots of stalks and leaves if it had been worked last year. A field cultivator works up wet clay ground or less vegetation on top better. These 2 are different but can give similar results. They are medium tillage. Might work 4 inches deep, little less.

A drag or harrow works the top inch and smooths, levels mostly bare ground, kills sprouting weeds.

I have a 14 ft. IHC. 470 disk. I have risked my hay field 3 times. It has a lift narrow. I will pull a cultipacker/roller over it 3 times at various angles, to get it smooth. Since your field is in grass and weeds. Spray it first with Roundup and 24D. I would plant Orchard grass. Spread it with fertilizer and put 20 lb. To acre of seed. Then roll it in. Then when get a stand spray it with 24D 1 Pt. Acre. Every year at least.
