Tips on getting potash

So Ive got a hay field, bout an acre or so, I had the soil tested cause I couldnt grow anything but weeds. The report said I need roughly 345 lbs of potash per acre. Ive researched it and cant find where to buy it, or anybody I can buy it from who will spread it. Anybody know anything? Where to buy it? Located in Cicero Indiana. Thanks

I know nothing of your area, but here most of the feed and seed stores will sell you the fertilizer and rent you a spreader to apply it. Even if the ones near you don't, they can lead you in the right direction.

Ag coops sell and/or spread fertilizer by the ton.

Your problem is you are pretty small for them to deal with. Couple decades ago most places would bag fertilizer, and it would be easy for you to get what, 7 bags of fertilizer and put it through a spinner spreader, almost a lawn size one would work.

But in todays world you run into the economys of scale.

Even places that still sell in bags haven't bagged potash for many years now (at least around here). If I'm buying in bags rather than bulk, I order K-Mag instead of potash (though K-Mag is also getting harder to find in bags). The percent of potassium per bag in K-Mag isn't as high as straight potash, but it's about as good as you'll find in bags. Most soils that need potash could probably benefit from the magnesium and sulphur of K-Mag - especially if there's lots of legumes (though that is by no means universally true).

345 lbs. is quite a bit per acre. Not sure I'd go that high all in one dose. What kind of yield was that soil test presuming you're expecting? 6 tons/acre? A lot of guys around here will apply fertilizer in the same ratio as the test recommends, but not in the same quantities. It's not strictly proper, but especially with prices this year I'd be tempted to dial it back a bit.

I'm assuming low pH isn't a concern in your area, but make sure you look at that just in case. Low pH, and aluminium toxicity (which goes hand-in-hand with low pH levels) will severely restrict plants' uptake of K, so if you need to correct pH it's hardly worth putting down any potassium without liming as well.
