The original subject was JD 71 Corn plates.

It's been a long time, but as I recall, plates came in 16 and 24 cell. Seed was graded in flat and round seed and small medium, and large. You can't mix them with different plates. If you're using a plate planter, you have to match the seed and the plate. Most of the newer planters use finger pickup, or vacuum or pressure pickups. That's how you 'singulate' the seed during planting. Too big a seed results plugging and poor drop. Too small a seed results in double drops, so singulation is important. The distance between seeds is where you get your per acre population. Finding the right sizee plate used to be on the back of the bag, but I haven't planted graded seed for about thirty years. Best talk to your seed dealer or get a newer planter....
