We have a couple show steers that we are working on and we are switching up their feed. We are going to switch to Steakmaker and whole corn but aren't entirely sure what ratio of pellets to corn we should be using, or if there is something better we should consider using? Need to be ready for the fall fairs.

What ever you do, make a gradual
change. Not just, this feed today,
that feed tomarow. You don't want them
turning up thier nose at it, for the
simple reason (well, that ain't what
you fed me yesterday).

Sadly, what your needing to know, is
what your competitors know, and they
are likely not going to tell you thier
secretes. But something as simple as a
feed ration, I don't think they'd hold
out on ya to bad, if your were to ask.
Not sure if this is a good place to
ask.

Local feed company (mainly does pre-
mixes and mineral) keeps a feed
nutritionist hired on. If I was
raising a show animal, I think I'd go
there and ask what he recommended for
a complete feed. At least hear what he
had to say.

But show animals opens up a whole
nother can of worms. Someone might be
feeding 5 percent bean mill for hair
quality or some crap. And not tell you
what thier secrete is. Know what I
mean???

Consult a beef animal nutritionist. Your local feedmill might have a resource, but I prefer someone that isn't also selling you the product. They will push product beyond your needs.

Whole corn can work in a steer diet, but I'm thinking (and I'm trained in dairy nutrition) that given today's corn prices some forage and ground corn would be more efficient dependent upon forage prices.

You may also be forced with a choice- grow a steer efficiently, or one that will win the fair.
