Field drainage

Got an 8 acre field of hay next to the house with 2 acres under 3-4 inches of water. Very common here in SW Michigan, swampy. This is my second year here and last year that spot stayed wet until July after 2nd cut, and it seems to be spreading.

Because it's so shallow I don't think I could put a 3" or even 2" pump out there. Could I use/would I ruin one of those 1" clean water 2 cycle pumps? Or is there a flat strainer of some type I could put on a 2 inch pump? Or do I need a semi-trash pump?

I'd like to irrigate the rest of the field, was thinking I could send a 1" line reduced to 3/4 into a splitter for a sprinklers. Specs say it will push 80gpm 10 feet. I think my sprinklers use less than 10gpm.

Help appreciated.

Dig a pit in the low spot and pull water out of the pit.

So, you have 220,000 gallons and want to pump it away at 80 gallons per minute? I guess that would work, but it sounds like your pump would be much slower than 80 as you have to pump much farther than 10 feet.

Thanks Paul,

Ya, ya I figured that out pretty quick. Glad I rented.

It usually dries out sometime in July, just hate losing a cut or two on that much of our limited space, plus whatever we planted there isn't there now but some kind of tolerable grass-like substance is growing. And now as it starts drying would love to send that water to other parts of the field. Could I put a 4" pump on what is now half as much water, but the part that stays longer, so say 100kgals and split the discharge to four 1" lines and put sprinklers on? Field is flat.

Is it feasible to dig a pond on one edge of the field and either tile or channel the surface water towards the holding pond. That is done on most industrial sites and residential subdivisions, but may not be cost effective for farmland.
