Tilling a rutted field

This fall was a wet mess around here. Everyone was mud bogging trying to get their crops off. I swamped through the field in the combine so now I have lots of ruts. Some of these are deep, what's the best way to deal with it?
Should I try and disk it to help and level it and then run a chisel plow?
 
I usually do just the opposite, use the chisel with spikes to loosen the soil, then disk to level. A good heavy duty offset disc would likely do a good job with one pass.
 
What is your soil type, sand, loam, clay, peat bog?

Makes a difference how I would attack it I guess.

I too might start with the chisel and finish with the disk, here we don't like to use a disk any more, in the clay. Disk ends up packing more than the combine did in the mid......

Keep your mouth closed and tongue out from between your teeth. I went crosswise some ruts once and bounced so high off the seat I hit my head on the cab roof.

First thing to do is strike out a path at an angle that will average out to being the least directly "crosswise" to all the ruts, then work the field at that angle.
 
I agree with Bob below. We always disk at some angle. Then pull a du-all or field cultivator. At the opposite angle. Just a little off from planting direction. Bin
